How to Care for Bamboo Knitwear
Table of Contents
Knitted garments made from bamboo fibre are distinguished by their softness, fluid drape, and characteristic silky sheen. The fabric feels pleasant against the skin and has a light cooling effect, making it especially comfortable in warm and hot weather. Bamboo-linen blends retain these qualities while gaining a more pronounced natural texture.
At the same time, bamboo knitwear is a relatively delicate fabric. Snags may appear if the knit comes into contact with metal bag hardware, jewellery, fasteners, or other sharp or rough details. For this reason, such garments are especially suitable for special occasions, evening outings, holidays, and careful everyday wear.
Main rule: careful wear and gentle care
Knitted bamboo fabric does not tolerate strong friction, stretching, or contact with objects that may catch on individual loops of the knit.
If the garment is not dirty, after wearing it is often enough to:
- air the garment,
- lay it flat and allow the fabric to regain its shape,
- avoid unnecessary washing when it is not needed.
While wearing the garment, try to avoid contact with metal bag hardware, sharp jewellery, zips, fasteners, and rough surfaces. These may catch on the loops and damage the delicate knitted structure.
Before washing: 3 simple steps
- Check the care label. The yarn composition and knitting structure may affect the permitted temperature and care method.
- Turn the garment inside out — this reduces friction on the outer surface and helps maintain its neat appearance.
- Fasten buttons, zips, and other closures if present, so they do not catch on the fabric.
Do not wash knitted garments together with clothing that has hooks, hook-and-loop fasteners, metal zips, or rough decorative elements. These may catch on the loops and damage the fabric.
How to wash bamboo knitwear correctly
Hand washing — the recommended method
- Fill a basin with cool or slightly warm water at a temperature of no more than 30°C.
- Add a small amount of liquid detergent for delicate fabrics.
- Dissolve the detergent fully in the water.
- Place the garment in the water and wash it gently with soft movements.
- Do not rub individual areas, stretch, or wring the fabric.
- Rinse the garment in clean water at approximately the same temperature.
Important: do not leave the garment in water for a long time. Prolonged soaking and intensive mechanical action may affect the shape and structure of the delicate knit.
Bamboo-linen knitted garments
A blend of bamboo fibre and linen combines the softness, fluidity, and silky feel of bamboo with the characteristic natural texture of linen.
The same gentle care rules apply to these garments:
- hand wash at a temperature of up to 30°C,
- use a mild liquid detergent for delicate fabrics,
- do not soak for long periods,
- avoid intensive rubbing,
- do not stretch or wring.
When wet, the shape and texture of the knit may change slightly. Do not try to stretch or aggressively reshape the damp fabric — after proper drying, the garment will gradually return to a smoother shape.
Which detergent to use
For knitted garments made from bamboo and bamboo-linen blends, it is best to use a liquid detergent designed for delicate fabrics. It distributes easily in water and generally rinses out more effectively from the delicate knitted structure.
Avoid using:
- chlorine bleach,
- harsh stain removers,
- detergents with a strong whitening effect,
- too much detergent.
What temperature to use for bamboo knitwear
The optimal washing temperature for knitted garments made from bamboo and bamboo-linen blends is up to 30°C.
Water that is too hot may:
- affect the shape of the garment,
- alter the knitted structure,
- increase deformation in certain areas,
- affect the appearance and silky finish of the fabric.
For delicate bamboo knitwear, gentle hand washing in cool or slightly warm water is the safest option.

How to remove excess water after washing
Wet bamboo knitwear should never be wrung out. Once saturated with water, the fabric becomes heavier, so twisting it firmly may stretch the knit and change the shape of the garment.
The correct method:
- Gently press the garment with your hands to remove some of the water without twisting it.
- Lay the garment on a clean, dry towel.
- Roll the towel together with the garment and press gently.
- Unroll the towel and immediately proceed to flat drying.
Do not hang the wet garment or try to remove water with intensive spinning or wringing.
How to dry bamboo knitwear correctly
Knitted garments made from bamboo and bamboo-linen blends should be dried flat only.
After washing:
- lay the garment on a dry towel or another clean, flat surface,
- gently reshape it to its original form,
- straighten the edges, sleeves, and seams without stretching,
- leave it to dry naturally at room temperature.
Avoid:
- tumble drying,
- hanging the wet garment on a hanger,
- drying it on a clothesline,
- placing it on a radiator or near a heater,
- leaving it in direct sunlight.
Under the weight of water, wet knitted fabric may stretch, so the garment should remain on a flat horizontal surface until completely dry.
Ironing and steaming
Direct ironing of knitted garments made from bamboo and bamboo-linen blends is not recommended. Pressure from a hot soleplate may flatten the knit, alter its texture, and affect the characteristic silky appearance of the fabric.
After proper washing and flat drying, it is usually enough to gently reshape the garment by hand.
If the fabric needs to be made smoother, a garment steamer can be used. Bamboo knitwear responds well to gentle steam: it helps smooth light creases and gives the surface a neater appearance.
You can use:
- a handheld or vertical garment steamer,
- the steaming function of an iron,
- steam from an iron without direct contact with the fabric.
Keep the steamer or iron a short distance away from the garment and direct the steam over the fabric using gentle movements. Do not press the hot surface of the iron or steamer directly against the knit.
How to wear bamboo knitwear
Bamboo knitted fabric is soft, fluid, and visually delicate. Its characteristic silky sheen gives the garment a more elegant and refined appearance, while the light cooling effect makes it especially pleasant to wear in hot weather.
At the same time, the knitted structure requires careful wear. Particular attention should be paid to accessories and clothing details that come into contact with the garment.
Try to avoid contact with:
- metal bag hardware,
- sharp jewellery,
- zips and fasteners,
- rough belts and accessories,
- other objects that may catch on the loops of the knit.
Such garments are especially well suited to special occasions, evening outings, holidays, and other situations where the clothing is not exposed to intensive friction. With careful wear, they can also be part of an everyday wardrobe.
How to store bamboo knitwear
Knitted garments made from bamboo and bamboo-linen blends are best stored folded.
For proper storage:
- do not leave the garment on a hanger for long periods — the knit may stretch under its own weight,
- make sure the garment is completely dry before storing it,
- fold the garment carefully without placing heavy items on top of it,
- store it in a dry, well-ventilated wardrobe,
- do not place it next to garments with sharp fasteners or metal decorations that may catch on the knit.
For long-term storage, it is useful to take the garment out occasionally and air it.
